Darlington Dragway
2017 General Rules


1. Tech Card: Every driver must fill out a tech card completely and legibly with the appropriate information and the correct car number. A driver can enter more than one class, but may not double enter in the same class.

2. Permanent Numbers: Each driver must have a car number (x number if running IHRA points) in a clear visible position on the rear windshield and driver side window. Dial-ins must also be clear and in the same positions.

3. Tech Inspection: All vehicles must be teched in before being allowed to go down the track. Tech will be performed according to IHRA rules and standards.

4. Wristbands: All drivers and crew members must obtain proper wristbands. If a driver is seen not wearing a wristband, they will not be able to make a pass until one is present. Crew members assisting race vehicles must obtain a wristband to enter the restricted race area.

5. Lane Choice: If more than one drive prefers the same lane, a Darlington Official will draw cards to determine lane choice. The drive who receives the higher card will have lane choice for that round.

6. Dial In: Dial-in must be displayed clearly for the Darlington Official to see on the driver’s side as well as the back windshield of the car. Once a drive has passed the bold white line at the head of staging, the dial-in of that car cannot be changed. Once a driver has pre-staged their vehicle, that driver has accepted their dial-in. The track is NOT responsible for incorrect dial-ins.

7. Staging Lanes: All cars are expected to be prompt and in their correct lane assignment. If a car that is in the staging lanes experiences and issue, they will have 4 minutes to get the car fixed. If the car is not fixable, the competitor will run the next car in line unless on a ladder.

8. Staging: All drivers must courtesy stage when on the starting line. If a Jr. Dragster double bulbs or roles through the lights, a Darlington Official will pull them back. The Jr. Dragster can only be pulled back one time per round.
9. Buy Backs: Each driver will be able to buy back, if offered, and receive points.

10. Buy Runs: Bye runs will be determined by best reaction time in previous time trial or elimination round. Each racer can only have one bye run until the point everyone else has had one. In an event there is an even number of vehicles and you have to run someone, you will get lane choice. Bye runs do not carry over but you will still be eligible to receive an earned bye in a later round.

11. Ladders: At 8 cars, drivers will be placed on a ladder based on reaction time. The driver with the best reaction time of the pair will have lane choice.

12. Electronics: Note: The penalty for intentional non-compliance (decided by track operator) will result in a 1 year suspension from all competition racing for that driver at Darlington Dragway. **See your class specifics for detailed descriptions of electronics allowed**

13. Pit Vehicles: You must have a valid driver’s license to operate a pit vehicle. Horseplay will not be tolerated.

14. Motorcycles: Motorcycle drivers must wear full leathers to go down the track.

15. Helmets: All drivers of vehicles that reach speeds of 13.99 seconds in the ¼ mile or 8.59 seconds in the 1/8 mile must wear a helmet.

16. Safety: All safety requirements are non-negotiable. All vehicles must have neutral safety switches. All vehicles must have a master cutoff switch that disables all electronics and power to the motor if reaching 7.49 in the 1/8 mile. “Off” position must be clearly labeled.

17. Payouts and Racer Information: Payouts will be done at the base of the operations tower, all drivers receiving payouts, must complete a W9 for tax purposes. Racer information can be obtained at the base of the tower.

18. Restricted Areas: All restricted areas are off limits to anyone who is not employed by or working with Darlington Dragway. These areas include, the timing tower, the center of the racetrack, inside the spectator safety walls, near or on any and all equipment and rescue vehicles and equipment.

19. Official Call: Darlington Dragway track officials have the final decision on any issue that could arise at any time. Please follow any instructions given to you by our track staff. If you are not sure, please ask to clarify information.
 

Darlington Dragway House Rules

While we can't cover & announce here on our website every rule to cover every situation, here is list of information to help you better understand some of the house & specialty event rules of Darlington Dragway. The most important thing to remember is that Darlington Dragway will do everything in it's ability to make sure that all staff, spectators & racers are safe. Please use common sense when making decision while attending any of our events. And when it comes to any kind of problem or issue, Darlington Dragway track officials have final decision on any issue that could arise at anytime. Please follow any instructions given to you by our track staff. If you not sure, ask to clarify information. Remember, track officials has final ruling on everything!

As a proud IHRA track member, Darlington Dragway follows all IHRA safety rules. Remember, track officials has final ruling on everything! Drivers and Crew members at an event shall conduct themselves according to the highest standards of behavior and sportsmanship, particularly in relation to other competitors and track officials, and in a manner that will not harm the reputation of the IHRA, Darlington Dragway or the sport of Drag Racing. Failure to do so may result in penalties ranging from disqualification from the event to being banned from Darlington Dragway at the discretion of the Conduct Advisory Board.

Any condition considered to be unsafe by Darlington Dragway track officials will be adequate grounds for barring or withdrawing a vehicle from participation in any event, until the fault has been remedied to the satisfaction of track officials. The decision of track officials will be considered final in all inspection or elimination protests or procedures. Tech staff reserves the right to disqualify any car not meeting the rules or the spirit of the rules. Darlington Dragway track staff also reserves the right to make amendments to the rules at later dates.
It is recommended to all racers that run 10.99 or faster in the 1/4 mile, or run a 6.99 or faster in the 1/8 mile, have either a diaper or an approved belly pan to run your vehicle at our track. This helps us maintain our racing surface & for our racer's safety.

All drivers & crew members must obtain proper wristbands. If a driver is seen not wearing a wrist band, they will not be able to make a pass until one is present. Crew members assisting race vehicles to the starting line must obtain a wristband to enter the race area.

IHRA & Track Gold & Silver cards will be accepted from racers as long as they are signed up for our 2016 Darlington Dragway points program.

Helmets may be required regardless of E.T. or speed. Helmets are available for rent in the tower for $5 per day. Other proper safety gear may be required for racers such as, but not limited to, jackets, pants, proper shoes/boots, fire suites, body restraints, Kevlar apparel, gloves, eye protection, depending on class. Open toed shoes are not allowed while racing.
The area of the track from the staging lane lines, to the water box & on to the starting line is meant for Darlington Dragway track officials, racers & crew members only.

Children under the age of 15 are strictly prohibited from operating any motorized vehicles on our premises at any time.
Improper use of golf carts and/or tow vehicles by driver, crew, family, or anyone else, may result in disqualification or expulsion from the facility and forfeiture of entry fees.

The speed limit in the pit area and the return road is 15 mph. Speeding on the return road may result in a disqualification of a race or ejection from the track.

Darlington Dragway is a large race facility. If you're having a hard time hearing our track pa system from your parking area, you can tune your radio to 89.1 FM.

During certain event, the staging lane assignments are different. This may change at anytime during any event. Make sure to read & listen for announcements.

When our lights are on, your lights must be on. In any race sessions after dark, each race vehicle must have at least one working taillight. Racers will get one warning for not having tail lights on. A second infraction of this rule may result in disqualification.

Disqualifications are made on a first or worst basis as per the IHRA rulebook. EXAMPLE: Crossing the centerline is considered worse than a red light. Since we cannot possibly cover all situations that may arise during eliminations, it is the race director's responsibility to make a judgment call on disputed calls. If it becomes necessary to settle a dispute, the race director will speak with the drivers involved ONLY, not the crews, wives, husbands, etc.

Anyone who locks up the brakes/smokes tires through the traps will be disqualified.

After you make a pass, no left u-turns or backing up on the track. There are 2 return roads on the right side of the dragstrip.

At no time is a passenger allowed to be in a car making a pass.

No one under the age of 14 is allowed in the restricted areas, this includes the area from the water box to the starting line.

No one under the age of 16 or anyone without a valid driver’s license is allowed to ride an ATV, golf cart, mini bike, scooter or bicycle in the pits.

Pit vehicles must be marked with the same race number as the race car it is with. They are to be used only for tow vehicles or business related to.

If a racer who is participating in an event suspects another competitor of cheating, the protestor must request the Tech Director do an inspection. Along with the request, an amount of $100.00 must be put up (given to the Tech Director) for the protest. The Tech Director has the final say.

Any driver observed by track officials to be consuming any amount of alcohol while still in competition, will be disqualified from the event. No alcohol permitted in the staging lanes or on the starting line. Absolutely NO glass bottles or containers allowed at the facility.

Pet owners are asked not to bring your pets to the track. If they absolutely must travel with you, they must be kept on a leash at all times. Pet owners will be asked not to bring the pet back if problems with the animal occur.

IHRA Summit Super Series

Safety first! All IHRA safety rules, regulations & requirements will be enforced.
It is recommended to all racers that run 10.99 or faster in the 1/4 mile, or run a 6.99 or faster in the 1/8 mile, have either a diaper or an approved belly pan to run your vehicle at our track. This helps us maintain our racing surface & for our racer's safety.
All drivers & crew members must obtain proper wristbands. If a driver is seen not wearing a wrist band, they will not be able to make a pass until one is present. Crew members assisting race vehicles to the starting line must obtain a wristband to enter the race area.

IHRA & Track Gold & Silver cards will be accepted from racers as long as they are signed up for our 2016 points program.
Every driver must fill out a tech card with the appropriate information and the correct car number. All vehicles must be teched in before allowed to go down the drag strip. This includes IHRA car specs. A driver can enter more than one class, but may NOT double enter in the same class. No tech cards will be sold after the first round of eliminations has been completed.

All drivers competing for the IHRA Summit Super Series Championship must have their credentials by the 1st points race. If the driver does not have their credentials by the first race, their points will ONLY count toward the track championship and NOT the Summit Supper Series Championship. Points can start once the proper credentials are obtained. If a driver lets their IHRA license expire during the season, their points will NOT count during the expired time for the Summit Super Series Championship, but can resume once renewed. You can NOT make licensing passes during a bracket race.
During the 2016 season, Darlington Dragway will have 12 points races. Only 10 races will count towards the final points total at the end of the season. A zero points result for a race can be dropped.
Earning track points are awarded in a simple & competitive process. There are no show up points. Points are awarded in elimination rounds only. 10 points per round won. Runner up gets 2 bonus points & the winner gets 3 bonus points.
Dial-In must be displayed clearly for the Darlington Official to see on the driver side of the car. Once a driver has passed the bold white line at the head of staging, the dial-in of that car can NOT be changed. Once a driver has Pre-Staged their vehicle, that driver has accepted their dial-in. The track is NOT responsible for incorrect dial-ins. Dial-In must be on left side of car also. (Exceptions for Dragsters, Jr. Dragsters, and Motorcycles).
“Duck hunting” will NOT be tolerated. If seen duck hunting, a Darlington official will give the driver ONE warning. If seen duck hunting a second time, the driver will be disqualified from the event.

There will be 2 time trial runs before eliminations. "Dash 4 Cash" will be offered during the 2nd time run. Tree will drop evenly on both sides. No crosstalk.
If more than one driver prefers the same lane, a Darlington Dragway track official will draw cards to determine lane choice. The driver who receives the higher card will have lane choice for that round.

Each driver will be able to buy back first OR second round.
Bye runs will be announced by a Darlington Dragway track official prior to racing. Bye runs will be determined by best reaction time in previous time trial or elimination round. Each racer can only have one bye run until the point everyone one else has had one. In an event there is an even number of vehicles and you have to run someone, you will get lane choice. Bye runs don't carry over. You will then be eligible to receive an earned bye again in a later round. Tie breakers used will be closest to dial in then best package.
If you are broke inside the white line, you will have 2 minutes to fire up your race vehicle. If broke outside the white line, you will have 3 minutes or the end of the round.
Stutter Boxes, Timed Down Track Throttle Stops & Wheel Pickup Sensing Devices are prohibited.
Delay boxes, Trans Brakes, Two Steps, and Playback Tachometers are permitted. Air Throttles used as launce control devices are permitted. Factory (OEM) installed computers are permitted, but lap top computers are not allowed while in competition.
The use of Delay Boxes in Modified are prohibited. Electronic and/or pneumatic shifters are allowed. Single stage locks, two steps and trans breaks are permitted. This is a true no box category.
You must have a valid driver license to operate a pit vehicle. Horseplay will not be tolerated.

275, 28, 29, Big Tire & Specialty Shootouts

No time slips will be given out during shootout.

Numbers will be drawn and placed on a pro-style ladder.

Coin flip or card draw for lane choice.

If any racer can't make it to the lanes under their own power within 5 minutes or 3 track pa calls, that vehicle is out.

Vehicles with bye run must break the beams under vehicle's own power and make a full pass.

All runs are pro tree, 1/8 mile, heads up & no time unless specified.

Courtesy staging encouraged.

Payout may be split due to time restraints or unsafe racing conditions such as an accidents & weather conditions.

Grudge TNT/Grude Race Events

No Food Vendors - No Large Grilles - No Commercial Grilles
 
If you are locked in for a grudge match, both drivers have to notify the head of staging of the rules. If head of staging isn't told about the match, the run will be considered a paired up test run only.

1/8 mile & 1/4 mile runs are available for test n tune & grudge matches.
 
No r/t times or trap speeds are shown unless you request for us to do so.
 
If our lights are on, your lights need to be on. Check those tail lamps before you come to the line.
 
After you make your official pass, there are 2 turn-offs located on the right side of the drag strip. No left u-turns & no backing up on the track.
 
Only drivers will receive time slips from ET ticket building. If any driver passes the ET ticket building, your ticket will be shredded.
 
If you feel there is a problem with your race vehicle after making a pass, go to our Tech Inspection building if you need assistance.

"Dash 4 Cash" Events

Darlington Dragway is offering a "Dash 4 Cash" to all of our Top Eliminator class, Modified class & Jr Dragster class racers for 2016 during bracket racers & IHRA SSS points race events during the 2nd round of time trials. The cost is $10.00 per racers/vehicle. This fee must be paid before any of the classes run for the "Dash 4 Cash". Drivers can go to the race tower to register for the "Dash 4 Cash".

The "Dash 4 Cash" will be for the 2nd round of time trials. Tree will drop evenly on both sides. Dial-ins will be shown. No crosstalk.

"Dash 4 Cash" winner will be determined by closest to dial-in.
 
If the best 2 racers run dead on, best reaction time will be the tie breaker.

Gamblers Race Events
Safety first! All IHRA safety rules, regulations & requirements will be enforced.

All racers must obtain a tech card before making any kind of passes down the dragway. No Exceptions!

It is recommended to all racers that run 10.99 or faster in the 1/4 mile, or run a 6.99 or faster in the 1/8 mile, have either a diaper or an approved belly pan to run your vehicle at our track. This helps us maintain our racing surface & for our racer's safety.

All drivers & crew members must obtain proper wristbands. If a driver is seen not wearing a wrist band, they will not be able to make a pass until one is present. Crew members assisting race vehicles to the starting line must obtain a wristband to enter past the staging lines.
All Gambler racers must sign up prior to running the race.
 
Come to lanes 1 & 2 to start 1st round.
 
There is 1 time run for each Gamblers race.
 
If there are any buybacks, they are available in 1st round only.
 
Number draw in race tower will determine 1st round bye run if needed.
 
2nd round & forward bye runs will be determined by fasted reaction time in previous round.
 
Lane choice will be determined by coin flip or card draw with track personnel or racers themselves.
 
15 minute break between rounds.
 
If you don't come to lanes after 3rd call, we will consider you broke.

If there is a mutual agreement between racers to split purse, this is between the racers.
Winner takes all. Darlington Dragway will pay the overall winner total cash purse.

Rainout / Break pass Policy
 
Spectators & racers assume all risk on purchasing general admission tickets or racing tech card/racing fees to all events at Darlington Dragway. As a courtesy to our customers, we will honor tickets, wristbands, passes and tech cards under special circumstances if any race or other events that may end too early due to weather and/or unsafe race conditions at Darlington Dragway. We will always post this information within 24 hours of the ending of an event on our website & Facebook pages. Break passes are consider on a case by case basis during races with elimination rounds. No break passes during test n tune events. No Cash Refunds.
 
Any event at Darlington Dragway that is delayed due to weather or unsafe racing conditions is not considered a cancellation. Darlington Dragway will attempt everything possible to finish the event that same day, night or weekend. No Cash Refunds.
